3D to 2D

3D to 2D assignment.
Designed from photos of architecture relief sculpture, paper stacking, and soap sculpture.

The Loser

I choose to work with Shel Silverstein's poem The Loser. In the poem once the loser has lost his head, he lists how he can't look for it, call for it, hear it, or even think about it. Therefor for in recreating the head I made sure it had somewhat of those features exaggerated. I went with a brainy pinkish color for the giant head. I choose to portray the loser also with a rock in hand emphasizing the irony found at the end of the poem.

Soap Turtles

Process pictures for my perspective soap turtle. .

Final Solution

For this project I took my soap turtle and 4 additive and 4 subtractive things to it.

For my additives I used;
-Sand
-Pastels
-Palm tree bark
-Candle wax

And for subtractive I;
-Cut off limbs
-Burned away wax
-Brushed sand away
-Melted and distorted pastels
-Poured OJ & let it wash off

I first cut all the limbs from the body

I then melted the main body using a torch, on a piece of palm tree bark and let the soap dry on the bark to adhere it together.

I crushed up pastels and sprinkled the dust onto the main body.

After melting and adhering the remaining limbs to the bark, I dropped sand on some limbs.

After dumping sand, I blew off excess and used the torch to melt the remaining into the soap. I brushed off some loose areas with my hand. I then torched the pastels in the soap to warp and blend the colors some. On the right side of the main body, as well as back left, I also dripped green candle wax into the piece.

Finally I poured Orange Juice on the whole piece, letting it wash away leaving a thin transparent sticky orange tint coving the sculpture.

Janine Antoni Response

I find the performance aspect of Antoni's work to be truly genius. It seems she generates pretty basic ideas such as falling and by experimenting with her performance arrives at unique and beautiful work.  By incorporating things such as her body into her work as both a tool and canvas she remains very involved in the process. In her work such as Eureka, I was initially astonished as to how she carved the human body using the negative space, but to see that she in-fact dipped her whole body into a tub of lard, and then with the help of cables pulled out; showed how performance can not only change the ascetics of a piece but also alter the message received. Within documenting the performance of all her own work, Antoni, is still able to display her performance as well as the final product. I also found it inspiring how for her film Touch, she went to the extent of learning to walk on a tight rope simply for the performance of creating the illusion that Antoni, was walking on the horizon in her film.

Memento

Materials used:
-Guitar String
-Cork board
-Glass

The memory that inspired my piece is jamming and playing music in a buddy of mines old band room. Sometimes referred to as the Treehouse, it was a little compact room on top of a pool shed stuffed back in the woods and the only way in was to climb a latter through the floor. It was in this space I learned to become a musician. Since then I pick up the guitar everyday so I knew I wanted to use guitar strings in my piece. The cork is meant to mimic the "Treehouse" vibe. I wanted to stack the cork to show how the space was off ground and the cork on top imitates the slanted walls. The glass, like our memory is only a fragment of what was actually there and also represent the slight hazardous environment. The strings are used in a way to show the expression and sort of freedom the room aloud for regardless of its limiting size.

9/29 Responses

-"The body is the primary mode of perceiving scale"

The body is the individual being, therefor when relating size, one always acts in comparison to ones self. To a 7 ft tall basketball player the 10 ft rim is merely a arm extension, away versus the 4 ft 7in 10 yr old boy who can hardly reach half way. This also explains why sometimes when we see a picture, its hard to know the size, unless compared to an object recognizable in size.

-"Capacity of objects to serve as traces of authentic experiences"

Its easier for our minds to see and object, and remember an emotion experienced with that object, than it is for one to completely recall a memory. That object also exists throughout time, from the time the memory happened to the time you recall the memory, therefor was part of the experience.

-"Nostalgia cannot be sustained without loss"

I believe for nostalgia to be sustained more specifically with change, and not necessarily just loss. You could maybe gain a little brother but still be nostalgic about the quite old peaceful days around the house. But then you could look at it as losing peace and quite in the house, so i think it really comes down to how you choose to look at it.

Reading response 9/29

After having read The Tokens, we see how small seemingly meaningless items can embody memories specific to individuals. As human beings our brain constantly is processing thousands of bits of information at a time, therefor our brain must filter through all this to attempt and save important information and toss the rest. I think these items serve as Tokens because its easier for our brain to see an object associated with a memory and recognize the emotions stored away with this memory, rather than it is to completely recall a memory and emotion off your head. I did however find it rather shameful that many of the tokens were seized from the children, considering that was a small puzzle piece of where they came from embodied with a story.
